Description

Woods is a farmhouse, now a private dwelling, that likely dates from the late 16th century. It was extended at the north end in the 17th century, and the lower end was rebuilt in the 20th century. The building is constructed of unrendered stone rubble, with some cob at the rear, and features an asbestos slate roof with gable ends. There is a stone rubble stack at the right end and a tall front lateral hall stack with offsets.

The layout consists of a variant 3-room and cross-passage plan. The wide cross-passage is divided axially to create an unheated rear room, while the lower end to the left has been rebuilt in the 20th century as a lean-to. At the rear of the hall, there is a 2-storey gable-ended unheated service wing, likely from the early 17th century, which creates an overall T-shaped plan. Although the interior could not be fully inspected, a straight joint and change in the plinth between the hall and inner room suggest that the inner room was probably added in the 17th century.

The exterior is two storeys high with a three-window range. The 20th-century windows are two-light casements, while the hall and inner room have three-light casements. There is a lean-to slate roof over the 20th-century porch. Inside, the inner room has been entirely altered, and the original fireplace is likely concealed. The hall features a deep chamfered cross ceiling beam and bressumers, along with 17th-century panelling at the rear of the former hall bench. There are also two 4-centred arched doorways with chamfered surrounds leading to the rear wing. This type of plan is similar to those found at Hill Farmhouse and Newland Farmhouse in West Anstey.
