Description
The linhay located approximately 100 metres north of Kingston House is a Grade II listed structure from the 18th century, which incorporates earlier materials and has been slightly modified in the 19th century. It is constructed of limestone rubble with dressed rubble piers, and the end and back walls are made of cob on the first floor. The roof is made of corrugated iron, which was previously thatch, and it is hipped at the north end while abutting the stable to the south.
The linhay has a rectangular plan with five bays and square-section rubble piers. Originally, it was open-fronted to the east, featuring a hay loft above. The front is symmetrical with four piers, and there are later rubble infill walls at ground floor level, along with one re-used 16th-century diamond-set mullioned window on the first floor.
Inside, there are three chamfered cross beams, which are likely re-used, and a five-bay roof structure with trenched purlins and pegged collars. The principal rafters, designed for threaded purlins, have also been re-used from another source. This linhay is one of the farm buildings associated with Kingston House, which dates back to 1743, and it likely re-uses materials from an earlier building.
