Description
72 High Street is a house that has been converted into flats. It dates from the early 17th century and was refronted in the early 19th century, with alterations made in the early 20th century. There is a reference from 1642 for permission to build a house on this site. The property includes a gabled house on South Street.
The building has three storeys and features two windows, with a two-window return to South Street. It has a hipped Welsh slate roof and a timber-framed plastered front, with masonry party walls. The windows are architraved sash types with glazing bars. The ground floor facing High Street has pilasters that support the entablature of a former shopfront, along with a mid-19th century sash window and doorway. The return to South Street has a jet-tied first floor, while the ground floor features modern doors and a 19th-century Yorkshire sash window with shutters.
On the corner of the building, there is the top of a former public pump with a framed inscription that reads, "This conduit was erected out of a gift of thirty pounds given by Robert Babbett 1607."
The South Street front of the building is a 16th or 17th-century house with two storeys and two windows. It has been refronted in Welsh slate and features a jet-tied first floor with a rendered finish. The old masonry party wall on the east side has a chamfered corbel from the former first-floor jetty. The paired architraved sash windows are complemented by an entrance in the attached house next door.
Inside, there is early to mid-19th-century joinery, including stairs and panelled doors, as well as a moulded plaster ceiling cornice on the first floor and a 17th-century panelled door.
