Description

The Old Vicarage is a house that was formerly the vicarage, built around the early 18th century with early 19th century wings at the rear. It is constructed of stuccoed stone rubble and features a steeply pitched tartaruga slate roof with gabled ends and coved eaves soffit. The building has two storeys and consists of six bays, with sash windows that have glazing bars in exposed cases. On the ground floor, there is a 20th-century verandah supported by square columns with modillion cornices. The gable ends have slate-hung chimney stacks. To the left (west), there is a single-storey bowed wing that has a conical roof, modillion eaves, and a curved sash window with glazing bars. The early 19th century wings at the rear (north) were likely added later. The vicarage was probably built by John Prince, who served as the vicar of St Mary's Church from 1681 to 1723 and authored "The Worthies of Devon," first published in 1701.
