Description

The stables and coach house, located about 40 metres north-northwest of Dundridge, date from around 1830, with a coach house extension added in 1891, possibly by W H Tollit. The building is constructed of rendered stone rubble and features slate roofs. The 1891 extension includes red and yellow brick dressings. The overall plan is L-shaped, formed by the addition of the coach house at right angles to the original stables.

The original stable range has a two-storey centre with a pedimental gable end facing southwest. On either side, there are outshuts with lunettes in the clerestorey above, which contain small hatches for the hay loft. The gable end features round-headed windows. The extension has a wide gabled end facing southeast, with a red brick elliptical arch leading to the carriageway and a Venetian window above, flanked by red brick and white brick pilasters for the sidelights. The gable includes moulded white brick verges and a finial at the apex, along with a timber cupola bellcote that has pilasters on the splayed corners, a cornice, and a shallow ogee dome topped with a weathervane.

Inside the coach house extension, the carriage entrance opens to a central coach house with an arch-braced timber roof and a central roof light at the ridge. Access to the stables is available on either side through brick doorways. The stables contain a complete set of iron and timber stalls, and the original stables also connect to the coach house, featuring a full range of stalls from around 1891.
