Description

A country house dating to circa 1830, built for the Harvey family, with alterations including a rear wing and verandah added circa 1893 by W.H. Tollit. The house is constructed of stuccoed stone rubble, with a rear wing of white brick and stone dressings. It has slate hipped roofs with lead rolls to the ridge and hips, and rendered chimney stacks with moulded corners.

The building has a complex L-shaped plan. The main range has a deep rectangular footprint with a central entrance hall, from which rooms are arranged on either side. The principal rooms are on the left side of the garden front, culminating in a large wing set at a right angle with a colonnaded balcony on the first floor. A late 19th-century wing extends to the north-east at the rear. The design is Neo-Classical.

The south-east front has two storeys and a 2:1:2 bay arrangement, with the centre slightly projected. It features a heavy cornice entablature that projects over the central bay, and a wide Doric portico with fluted columns and later 19th-century glazed doors. The windows have moulded architraves and sills, and likely originally held sash windows, now replaced by later 19th-century casements. The south-west return, a long garden elevation, is arranged with a 3:1:3:1 bay arrangement, with the centre and right-hand bays projecting and featuring pilasters. The entablature of the south-east front continues to project over the centre and right-hand bays, which have raised parapets, extending around the projecting north-west wing to create a colonnaded balcony on its inner south-east side. The balcony is supported by fluted Doric columns and contains a cast iron balcony with bosses at the intersections of diagonal bars. The south-west end of the wing has paired windows on each floor, flanked by blind panels on the ground floor and pilasters on the first floor, the right-hand pilaster acting as the end pier of the south-east balcony. The entire south-west front has a late 19th-century verandah with Ionic columns, paired at the centre, supporting a wooden modillion cornice. The roof of the verandah has a range of dormers with squat columns and entablatures. A glazed conservatory with pediments is located at the end of the verandah, with a cast-iron balustrade featuring diagonal bar bosses between the columns.

The interior features a fine, large entrance hall with good moulded plasterwork and a geometric staircase in a rounded end of the hall. The quality of the hall suggests that further interesting rooms may be present.

Dundridge was the historic seat of the Harvey family.
