Description

This range of farm buildings, dating from the 17th and 18th centuries and extended in the mid-19th century, is located to the north of Broadley Farmhouse. Constructed from slate stone rubble, it features a hipped slate roof that is coated in bitumen. The overall layout is L-shaped, with the short wing serving as a barn that is possibly integral to the northeast end of the farmhouse. At the north end of the barn, there may be an integral cross-wing that originally contained a cider house. This cross-wing was extended in the 19th century to create a long row of shippons with lofts above, forming a rectangular courtyard behind the farmhouse. The western end of this shippon range has been converted into a house.

The exterior of the barn at the eastern end includes two doorways facing the courtyard, each with slated canopies. The long shippon range, which runs parallel to the farmhouse, has shippon doorways on the ground floor with segmental brick arches, and the earlier eastern end features ventilation holes on the first floor. The converted house section at the western end has 20th-century casement windows on the first floor and two garage doorways on the ground floor. The ground at the back is at a higher level, with a loft door at the eastern end and a small 20th-century wing attached to the converted house on the western side.

Inside, the barn has trusses with collars that are lapped and pegged to the face of the principal beams. The loft over the northern end of the range includes a small fireplace with a chamfered lintel that has stepped stops, and the floor is supported by reused chamfered beams. The roof of the shippon range to the west features bolted softwood scissor trusses.
