Description

This pair of adjoining limekilns, dating from the late 19th century, were extended in the early to mid-19th century. They are constructed from local slate rubble and feature a flat front with two arched openings, known as swallows. The right-hand opening is likely the original and has a pointed arch, although the top corbel has collapsed. The left-hand opening is a larger round arch with dressed slate voussoir. Both openings have stoking holes at the back. A straight masonry joint can be found immediately to the left of the right-hand kiln. The kilns are built into the bank, allowing for top loading from the higher ground level at the back. They have been infilled with earth and rubble. In front of the kilns is a wall enclosing a small area with an opening to the left, opposite the left-hand arch, while the wall to the right has partly collapsed. The kilns are located on the shore of Bow Creek, a tributary of the River Dart.
