Description

Park Farmhouse, Including Front Garden Area Wall and Railings

This is a house, formerly a farmhouse, probably dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, extended and remodelled around 1830–40. It is constructed of plastered stone rubble, with rough rendering at the rear. The roof is slate with gabled ends and a box gutter at the front, carried on shaped wooden brackets. Large rendered stacks are present, with a projecting gable end stack to the right and an axial stack to the left of centre.

The plan reflects the 1830–40 remodelling and extension. It comprises three rooms with an entrance passage between the centre room and right hand room, leading to a staircase housed in a tower at the back. The lower right hand room is heated from a gable and stack; the centre and left hand rooms share an axial stack with back-to-back fireplaces. A large outshut behind the right hand room contains the dairy, with another smaller outshut behind the left and centre rooms. The original house was probably of only two rooms, meaning the left hand room and large outshut behind the right hand room are likely additions from around 1830–40. The stair tower also dates to this period, as does the refenestration of the front. The small outshut behind the centre and left hand rooms is a 19th-century addition.

Externally, the house is two storeys with a symmetrical three-window front, though the two doorways are positioned to the right of centre and at the left end of the front. Mid-19th century twelve-pane sashes with small horns are present. The doorway to the right of centre has a 20th-century classical style pilastered doorcase and a mid-19th century nine-panel door with glazed top panels. The doorway at the left end of the front has a 19th-century six-panel door.

The unspoilt rear elevation features a stair tower to the left of centre with a hipped roof and a tall 19th-century ten-pane fixed-light stair window. To the left, a catslide roof covers the outshut. At the extreme right hand end on the first floor is an 18th-century two-light wooden window with leaded panes, cyma moulded on the inside, with 19th-century internal window shutters. At the centre of the first floor is a 20th-century casement, below which is the single storey outshut with a lean-to roof.

Internally, most of the 19th-century joinery remains intact. The right hand room has a 20th-century chimneypiece covering a large open fireplace. The centre room has a mid-19th century iron grate and a 20th-century chimneypiece. The left hand room retains an 18th-century chimneypiece with a cyma cornice and an old cupboard to the right with boarded doors. Most of the mid-19th century six-panel doors survive. The dog-leg staircase features moulded stick balusters, a turned newel, and a moulded mahogany hand rail. The first floor contains panelled cupboards and single two-panel doors. The roof is a 19th-century railed softwood structure.

The front garden wall and railings, dating from around the mid-19th century, are included in the listing. The wall is of low slate rubble with slate copping; wrought iron railings above feature arrow heads to the shafts. The gate to the right of centre, opposite the house doorway, is similarly detailed wrought iron with a stile scrolled over the top rail. A second gateway at the right hand side of the garden has a similar gate.
