Description
The horse trough, which also serves as a drinking fountain, is located approximately 2 meters to the west of the Pannier Market in Market Square, Dartmouth. It was built in 1898 and is made of granite ashlar. The trough is supported by two squared blocks of granite, with chamfered bottom edges between the blocks and a rounded projecting end. To protect it from traffic, granite bollards are placed against the feet on the street side. The left (north) end of the trough features ogee curves that house water pipes, and on the outer side, there is a small ornately-cast tap leading to a semi-circular basin, which serves as the drinking fountain. The front of the trough is inscribed with lead letters that commemorate its erection in memory of Henrietta Loraine, a founding member of the South East Devon branch of the RSPCA and secretary of the Torquay Anti-Vivisection Society for ten years. The trough is included for its group value.
