Description

Rose Cottage is a small house dating from the early 16th century, with alterations made in the early to mid 17th century and restoration in the late 20th century. The walls are made of slatestone rubble, and the front wall appears to have been refaced in the late 20th century. It has a gable-ended slate roof and brick stacks at each gable end. The layout consists of a two-room plan, with a fireplace at each end, the larger room located to the left. Originally, it featured an open hall with a central hearth, which was floored over around the mid 17th century.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical two-window front, and three windows on the ground floor, which are late 20th century small-paned casements. There is a 20th-century plank door to the left set in a round-arched doorway, part of the late 20th-century refacing. Inside, the ground floor has chamfered cross beams with drawer and bar stops, and close-set chamfered joists. A wooden newel stair leads to the upper floor. The house retains four original jointed cruck roof trusses, which have slightly cranked collars and three threaded purlins, all of which are smoke blackened. This house is an unusual survival of a small medieval dwelling that still has its original roof. Its original use is not clear, given the quality of its carpentry, and it may have once been larger or connected to the medieval building located immediately behind it, known as 1 - 4 Shute Cottages.
