Description

This early 19th-century Custom House has been altered over time. The front of the building is rendered in cement and has two windows on each floor. A decorative cast-iron balcony, likely dating from around 1820, is situated on the first floor and features a quatrefoil design with shaped brackets. A small soffit runs along the eaves, extending to a window wing on the north side, which is constructed of stone with a rendered and lime-washed first floor. The windows are mainly segmented-headed and retain their glazing bars. Three windows are visible on the south-west return. The Custom House, which currently houses premises occupied by Messrs H Cook and Son, forms a group with the Unity Buildings on Union Street, and also with No 1 Fore Street, the Unity Buildings, and the offshore sea-chest on Union Street.
