Description
Rushton Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with later alterations. The walls are a mix of cob and rubble, colourwashed with rough plaster, and feature brick chimney shafts topped with slate roofing. Originally a three-room plan, the lower end of the house is to the right, and the hall is to the left at a higher level, with a two-storey hall bay projecting forward and a front lateral stack. There's a passage between the hall and an unheated central room, with a kitchen to the far right, also with a front lateral stack. A later stack was inserted into the lower end of the central room. The front wall of the lower end of the house is set back and was likely rebuilt, and a 19th-century wing is set at right angles to the rear.
From the front, the windows are asymmetrical, arranged in a 1:1:1 pattern, with casements of various dates, mostly from the 19th century. Two openings provide access: one to the passage and another inserted into the kitchen, both with simple plank doors.
Inside, the kitchen has two large axial ceiling beams, chamfered with large hollow-step stops, and a blocked fireplace. The central room also has two large axial ceiling beams, similarly chamfered and stopped. The hall features a ceiling beam with a double-ovolo moulding and exposed original floor joists. A 20th-century grate blocks the original fireplace. The passage contains a 19th-century straight-flight staircase. The roof was replaced in the 19th century.
