Description

Down Cottage is a cottage, likely dating from the 18th century. It is built of rubble and cob, with roughcast rendering, and has a tall roughcast chimney shaft and a steeply-pitched straw-thatched roof with gable ends. The building originally comprised two rooms; an unheated room to the left and a heated room to the right, with a rear corner fireplace and bread oven. The two-storey front has an asymmetrical two-window arrangement, featuring 20th-century casement windows with close-set glazing bars. A plank door is located to the left of centre. Inside the right-hand ground floor room is a chamfered ceiling beam and a fireplace with a low wooden bressumer. A straight-flight staircase leads to a central lobby.
