Description

Town Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with some remodelling from the 19th century that included changes to the windows. The building is constructed of rubble and cob, with a roughcast finish and a gabled roof made of corrugated asbestos. It features two brick ridge stacks and a rendered lateral stack at the front, topped with a brick shaft.

The original layout was likely a three-room and through-passage plan, with a large inner room on the left that has an axial stack, a hall with a front lateral stack, and an integral hall bay that is two storeys high. The lower end on the right has been rebuilt, and the through-passage has been removed. The inner room has been altered in the 19th century, with a new door opening and partitioning added to create a narrow lobby that leads to a 19th-century staircase, as the original staircase has been removed. There is also a 19th-century service room at the lower end, which has an axial stack, and an unheated store beyond it. An outbuilding has been added at the higher end.

The exterior has two storeys and features an asymmetrical front with three groups of windows, arranged as 3:3:1. The windows are late 19th-century casements, mostly with horizontal glazing bars. There is a door opening to the left leading into the former inner room, which has a late 19th-century half-glazed door, and a door opening to the right leading into the lower room, which has a plank door.

Inside, the ground floor has large chamfered ceiling cross beams with straight-out stops, and the hall features a simple framed ceiling. There is a plank and muntin screen between the hall and the inner room, although this is currently obscured by 20th-century partitioning, and the remains of a blocked doorway can be seen. All the fireplaces have been blocked, with 20th-century grates inserted. The roof shows evidence of a raised cruck and has trusses with two rows of purlins.
