Description
The East Worlington War Memorial is a monument dedicated to those who died in the First and Second World Wars, likely built in the late 1940s. It is made of granite and features a stepped octagonal base that supports a tapered rectangular shaft topped with a Celtic cross. The memorial is set on a concrete plinth, which is surrounded by an earth embankment. The front of the plinth has a dry-stone rubble wall that was added in 2009. Three faces of the base are inscribed with the names of the fallen, including thirteen from the First World War and four from the Second World War.
There is no record of an opening ceremony for the memorial, and it is believed to have been constructed in the late 1940s. The concrete plinth was refaced in 2009.
The East Worlington War Memorial is designated at Grade II because it serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of world events on the local community. Its design and craftsmanship, characterized by the tapered shaft and Celtic cross, reflect the English tradition of commemorating the fallen. Despite its simplicity, it is an elegant and dignified memorial that enhances the setting of a nearby listed building, Oak Ash and Thorn, and complements its rural surroundings.
