Description
No. 37 Pilton Street is a house dating from the early 17th century, with later alterations. It was originally part of a single dwelling with No. 36 to the south, but the two buildings were rented and treated separately until 1711. The property is owned by the Pilton United Charities.
The house is constructed with mass wall construction and is rendered, topped with a slate roof that is gabled at both ends. It features brick stacks at the ends. The main range is single-depth and two rooms wide, with a central passage that has been taken out of the width of the left-hand room. The current staircase is from the 20th century and is located in the rear or left-hand room, although it may be in the position of the original staircase.
The house has two storeys and presents an asymmetrical three-window range. All windows are 12-pane horned sashes. The front door, positioned to the left of centre, has six fielded panels with the upper panels glazed, accompanied by a sash window to the left. There are two ground-floor windows to the right of the front door and two first-floor windows above.
Inside, the ground-floor right room features an incomplete single rib ceiling. The first floor includes an old oak door-frame with a stud door, leading down into the left room, which has a 17th-century plaster wall frieze. The right room on the first floor has a coved ceiling and rib patterns on the walls.
Historically, the earliest documentation for the house is found in a Trust Deed from 1577, which merged several Pilton charities. From 1711 to 1845, the house was rented out as one dwelling with No. 36.
