Description
Thornfield Barn is a 17th-century barn and stables with a loft above. It features a stone rubble plinth supporting unrendered cob walls and has a corrugated asbestos roof with gable ends. The building is rectangular in shape, with stables located at the lower end. There is a stable plank door at the front and a two-light chamfered timber mullion window at the rear, positioned to the left of the loft plank door. Above the lean-to, there is a square loft opening at the gable end, and the barn has a wide opening at the rear. The roof structure consists of four raised cruck trusses, each resting on individual well-bedded short wall plates. It has two tiers of trenched purlins, which were originally fitted with collars tenoned into the soffits of the blades but have since been replaced with side-pegged collars. Additionally, one blade at the lower end of the barn has been replaced with a straight principal.
