Description
A row of three cottages, likely originally a larger farmhouse, is located on Church Street in Braunton. They were probably built in 1579, as indicated by a datestone on number 35. The cottages are constructed of rubble and cob, rendered and pebbledashed, with number 33 whitewashed with a left-end stack; number 35 is colourwashed with a large, off-set rubble stack; and number 37 is pebbledashed with a slate roof. They formerly had a three-cell and cross-passage layout.
The cottages are two storeys high with a single-storey outshut to number 35 and a two-storey, right-angled rubble extension with gable ends to number 37. Number 33 features 20th-century casement windows on either side of a half-glazed door. Above number 35 is a small, two-light casement window with six panes to each light, a 20th-century two-light casement above a small, slated lean-to roof adjoining the stack, and a datestone inscribed "1579" immediately to the left. A low 20th-century door is located to the left. Number 37 has two two-light timber casement windows above a 20-paned wooden fixed light, and a timber sash window with eight panes per sash to the right of a half-glazed 20th-century door. The hall stack contains a blocked internal chimneypiece and a single chamfered hall beam.
