Description
The building is a village hall located approximately 30 metres south-east of the parish church in Bishops Tawton. It was originally a school, likely built in 1841 by Hayward, and has undergone some 20th-century alterations. The structure is made of stone rubble with prominent pointing and features slate roofs with coped gable ends, moulded kneelers, and a spike finial at the left end apex. It is rectangular in shape and single-storey, with an extension that has a lower roof level at the right end. There is a recessed porch in the angle and another porch at the left gable end.
On the north side, there are two buttresses with offsets. The building has a three-window range of 19th-century ovolo-moulded mullion windows with sashes inserted; the leftmost window has also had a plank door added. The extension features a three-light window with a transom. There is a plank door to the porch at the right end, while the left gable end porch has been rebuilt around 1980 and now includes a turret and bell that were originally added in 1887 to the east gable apex of the main range. The building is included for its group value.
