Description

A terrace of four houses located at 7-10 Grosvenor Street, Barnstaple, likely built in the late 1820s alongside the Derby Lace Works. The houses are constructed with a smooth-rendered mass wall and have slate roofs, one of which is covered in pantiles. They feature stacks with brick shafts and old chimney pots. The houses are double-depth, with a single room width.

The elevation has a 2:2:2:2-window range, with front doors on the left-hand side. An eaves board runs along the top. Number 7 has a 20th-century front door and retains its original 12-pane hornless sash windows. Number 8 is slightly more elaborate, featuring a three-panel front door with an overlight, a cornice supported by brackets and windows with 2-pane sashes incorporating margin panes, the first-floor windows possessing cill blocks. Number 9 retains its 12-pane sashes and a leaded glass overlight. Number 10 has a round-headed doorway with a 20th-century front door and also retains its sash windows. The interiors were not inspected.

The area of Grosvenor Street was originally built to provide housing for workers at the nearby lace factory. The terrace represents relatively unspoiled and early examples of workers’ housing.
