Description

Pilton Long Stone is a long stone located in Bellaire, Pilton. It is possibly prehistoric and may have had a commemorative purpose. The stone was re-sited and recorded in 1967 due to a road improvement scheme. It is made of local limestone with veins of calcite and measures approximately 3 feet by 2 feet 9 inches by 8 feet 9 inches, weighing around 5 tons. There is a hole through the stone about 3 feet 6 inches from the ground. Historical references from the 18th and 19th centuries indicate that the stone fell in the 19th century and was re-erected 17 feet west of its original position by Mr. Lee of Broadgate House, within a walled garden. It was moved again in 1967.
