Description

The former Town Gaol, built in 1838, is located to the rear of Nos 22 and 23 on East Street in South Molton. This building replaced a 17th-century gaol and is constructed of rubble. It currently lacks a roof and is in a derelict state. The south facade features four windows with segmental heads; the leftmost windows are sashes with glazing bars, while the other two are casements. There is a door on the left side, but there are no openings on the rear or sides of the building. Inside, the walls are made of brick, and there is a plain staircase with a metal balustrade. The structure is included mainly for its historical interest. A former exercise yard is partially preserved, although it is partly obscured by later additions.
