Description

These are two adjoining cottages used for farm storage, located approximately 10 meters northeast of Charlestown Barton. The left-hand cottage likely dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century, while the right-hand cottage is from the 18th century. The cottages are constructed from unrendered stone and cob, topped with corrugated iron roofs that have gable ends.

The left-hand cottage features an axial stone rubble stack and a demolished stack with a projecting bread oven at the right gable end. It has a two-room plan, with the right-hand room heated by the axial stack. This room contains a staircase facing the entrance in the left-hand corner, and there is a lofted storage shed at the left end. The left-hand cottage has a two-window range, with rectangular window openings on each floor flanking a large stone porch that has a pantiled monopitch roof and a semi-circular headed doorway with stone voussoirs. There is a plank door at the left end leading to the storage shed.

The right-hand cottage also has a two-room plan, with the room on the right heated by a gable end stack. It has a nearly symmetrical two-window range, featuring two-light casements on each floor to the left and a 20-paned window above a three-light window to the right of a corrugated lean-to porch.

Inside the left-hand cottage, there are two chamfered ceiling cross beams and a fireplace lintel with run-out stops in the heated room. The roof structure has been replaced, except for a single original truss over the right-hand cottage.
