Description

The garden structures at Tapeley Park House, dating from the early 20th century, are part of John Belcher's design for the house and its gardens. These include three terraces made of stone rubble with brick coping and projecting buttresses, featuring moulded stone coping. Each terrace has a central flight of brick steps flanked by stone walls with moulded coping.

On the west side, there is a summer house constructed from stone rubble, topped with a scantle slate ogee hipped roof that has a ball finial and projecting timber modillion eaves. This small rectangular building has a tripartite open front with a central arch supported by columns with moulded capitals. In front of the summer house, a flight of steps is flanked by walls adorned with oriental mythical beasts. Tall monolithic granite columns stand in front, entwined with dragons.

The south side features gatepiers made of stone rubble, square in section and topped with ball finials. The wrought iron gates are decorated with ornate cresting of leaves and scrolls. In the centre of the lower terrace, there is a sundial made by J Bird of London, which has a spiral fluted baluster with a Corinthian capital and a bronze sundial on top.

Additionally, there is a tool shed on the upper terrace, on the east side, built of brick and stone rubble with a patterned slate roof and a Dutch gable that includes niches containing busts. Stone arched gateways can be found on the north and east sides.
