Description
The Hacche-Thain Headstone, dated 1889, is located approximately 4 metres northeast of the vestry of the Church of St Mary in Down St Mary. This headstone commemorates Mary Hacche-Thain and is made of Bath stone, featuring polychrome mosaic decoration in a Gothic style. It stands about 0.9 metres high on a volcanic stone plinth. The headstone has a moulded pointed top with flanking pilasters that include sunken panels with trefoil heads and fleur-de-lys finials. The upper panel displays a relief Latin cross fleuree on a stepped base set against a background of gold and red mosaic. The lower panel is inscribed with Victorian Gothic lettering that notes the death of Mary Hacche-Thain in 1889. This headstone is part of a series of distinctive headstones in the churchyard, notable for their polychrome mosaic decoration, which reflects the craftsmanship interest of Rev. W T A Radford. Additionally, the Jesse window, the finest of the Clayton and Bell windows in the church, serves as a memorial to the same individual.
