Description
The dovecote and adjoining stable yard walls, located approximately 2 metres east of Holcombe Court, date from different periods. The dovecote is likely from the 16th century, while the stable yard walls were built around 1845. Constructed from local grey limestone rubble, the dovecote features a slate roof and is now used as a grain silo. It has a circular shape with a plain angular eaves cornice and a conical slate roof over an inner stone vault. At the top, there is a circular hole beneath a 19th-century round lantern. The north-east side includes a plain segmental-headed doorway below a window that is currently blocked by the silo ventilator. Uniquely, the interior of the dovecote lacks nest holes; instead, wooden boxes were once fitted, though none remain today. The dovecote extends into the forecourt from the 19th-century stable yard, which has a tall wall containing a Beerstone Tudor style doorway with carved foliate spandrels. This dovecote is not only of intrinsic interest but also plays an important visual role at the front of Holcombe Court as seen from the front drive.
