Description
The Hay chest tomb, located approximately 2 metres east of the aisle of the Church of St. Peter, is a Grade II listed structure. It is possibly dated 1628 and commemorates William Hay. The tomb is made of purple volcanic ashlar with a basalt lid and has a rectangular shape. The sides feature three bays that are separated by panelled pilasters, with each panel containing a plain oval medallion. The plinth is now buried, and above it is a broad moulded cornice topped with a flat lid. The lid has Gothic lettering inscribed on its surface, although the inscription is very worn. The name William Hay is still legible, along with what appears to be the date 1628 in Roman numerals.
