Description
This small barn, located approximately 20 meters east of Great Gutton Farmhouse, has late medieval origins and was remodeled in the 17th century. It is constructed of cob on volcanic stone footings, which rise to the first floor level on the south front. There are some 20th-century breeze-block repairs, and the roof is covered with corrugated iron, having originally been thatched. The barn, or granary, features a hayloft above and has gabled ends. The front façade includes two cart loading bays, each with a small window ambrasure to the right of the central loading bay for the hayloft. The structure has a three-bay roof supported by side-pegged jointed cruck trusses with dovetail jointed collars. A narrow ventilator cut into the cob on the right side (east) gable suggests that the 17th-century construction was a remodeling of a larger, presumably late medieval barn.
