Description
The school building, dated 1874, is constructed from local red sandstone rubble with cream-coloured limestone ashlar detail and quoins, and has a slate roof. It follows a T-plan, with the main block facing north-east comprising two rooms, and a projecting central front section. A stack is located in the angle between the wings. To the left of the front block is a gabled porch and a single-storey lean-to cloak room. The building is of restrained Tudor Gothic style. The porch contains a segmental pointed arch and an original plank door, with a limestone date plaque directly above. A small two-light window with shoulder-headed lights is adjacent to the porch. Elsewhere, tall mullion-and-transom windows are present. The gable ends of the main block contain large pointed arch windows with simple Perpendicular tracery, hoodmoulds with block label stops, shaped kneelers, and coping. The front playground is enclosed by red sandstone walls. The rear and side walls are taller, constructed of stone rubble with rustic crenellation along the top. The lower front wall is of ashlar with limestone coping, incorporating lower sections with wrought iron railings. A gateway is recessed within the front wall, flanked by plain square section gateposts with pyramid caps.
