Description
The Coronation Pump is a water pump and trough dated 1838, located on the north side of Sandford Shute in Sandford. It is constructed from volcanic ashlar and features a granite trough. The pump is set within a round-backed alcove that has plain imposts and a round head. At the top, there is plain coping that rises over a cast-iron plaque inscribed with the letters VR and the date June 28, 1838. Below the cast-iron pump setting at the rear of the alcove, the granite trough is inscribed with ARWG, Bodley, Iron, London. To the right, there is a low forward-curving quadrant wall with 20th-century concrete coping, which includes a rectangular aperture allowing a stream to flow over a low dam wall, creating a head of water. This pump was erected to commemorate the coronation of Queen Victoria.
