Description
The gate posts, gates, and iron railings located approximately 3 metres south of South Lodge at Shobrooke Park were created around 1850 by T L Donaldson for John Henry Hippisley. They are designed in a classical style. The gate posts are made of ornate Portland stone ashlar and feature a moulded base, rusticated quoins, side pilasters with scrolls, and a carved frieze depicting antler skulls with festoons, topped with large lobed vines and acanthus buds. The plain cast-iron railings, which flank the gates, rest on a stone plinth and have spear tops, a middle rail, and low intermediate rails. These railings are divided into sections by fluted main stanchions that are topped with finials and ornate open-work terminal piers. The gates themselves are adorned with ornate leaves featuring scrolled crestwork and borders above and below the lock bar, with the lower panels incorporating two 'H's in each leaf.
