Description

Raddon Garden is a house, likely dating from the 17th century or earlier, although it has been extensively modernized and extended in the late 20th century. The walls are whitewashed cob on stone rubble, and the roof is thatched with a plain ridge, hipped at the left end and gabled at the right. A stack is situated at the right end, and there is a rear lateral stack to the main block.

The original plan probably consisted of a single-depth block, originally three rooms wide, with the left-hand room heated by the rear lateral stack. A large two-story addition was built at the rear, and a single-story block extends from the left end. The original layout is not entirely clear, but the right end may have originally been an outbuilding.

The front has an asymmetrical five-window facade. A 20th-century thatched porch, supported by posts, shelters the front door, which is positioned to the left of centre. The windows are 20th-century 2-light casements, each with two panes.

Inside, the fireplace associated with the lateral stack has jambs made of local volcanic stone and a replaced lintel. The right-hand ground-floor room contains a roughly chamfered cross beam. The roof space was not inspected, but may contain interesting timbers.

The house is one of several thatched buildings at Raddon and is included on the list for its contribution to the group’s character and appearance.
