Description
Radford Headstone, located approximately 8 metres east of the north aisle of the Church of St Mary, is a headstone dated 1872 in memory of Emily Williams Radford. Made from Bath stone, it features polychrome mosaic decoration and is designed in the Gothic style. The upright stone stands about 1 metre high and has a chamfered plinth, a tapering shaft, and a shaped head with moulded edges, which includes a diagonally-set square with circles on each side. The head is adorned with an inset pattern of polychrome mosaic that displays sacred symbols within each circle. The shaft is inscribed with Victorian Gothic lettering, commemorating the death of Emily Williams Radford in 1872. This headstone is part of a series of unique headstones in the churchyard, notable for their polychrome mosaic decoration, reflecting the craftsmanship influenced by the Rev. W T A Radford.
