Description
No. 17 St Peter Street is a house dating from the early to mid 19th century. It features rendered solid walls and a slated roof with two spans that run parallel to the street. The building is double-fronted and double-depth, with no chimneys.
The exterior consists of three storeys and is three windows wide. The outer windows were originally large enough to accommodate triple sashes. The central doorway on the ground floor is flanked by Doric pilasters that have an incised Grecian pattern, supporting an entablature with a slightly unusual design. The doorway has panelled reveals and a soffit to the arch, leading to a five-panelled door, where the two lowest panels are flush and the single wide top panel is now glazed. To the right of the door, there is a moulded iron shoe-scraper. The windows have been entirely replaced in the mid to late 20th century with wooden frames featuring widely spaced glazing bars and transom lights. Similar windows can be found at the rear of the building.
The interior has not been inspected. Historically, the rear of this building was known as Greenway House and served as a ladies' school run by Misses Mallet and England, as depicted in FJ Snell's Mate's Illustrated Tiverton from 1902. The house holds a prominent position within a significant streetscape, contributing to the group value of the area.
