Description

Warren's Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 16th to early 17th century, but it was thoroughly modernised in the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with stone stacks topped by 19th-century brick and a slate roof that was formerly thatched. The main block, which faces south, has a much-altered three-room-and-through-passage plan, with an inner room apparently located to the east (right side of the front). There is a rear block behind the hall. The farmhouse features projecting gable-end stacks and an axial stack that backs onto the presumed passage, with a putative rear door that has been blocked and the lower passage screen removed. A 19th-century main door and entrance hall with stairs to the rear were apparently inserted into the upper end of the hall. The building is two storeys throughout and has a four-window front, primarily featuring 19th-century casements of various sizes and irregular arrangement. Many of these windows retain their glazing bars, notably the right end ground floor three-light window with 15 panes and the left end ground floor window, also three lights, with 12 panes each. There is a single bee hole at the left end. The left end stack has an oven projection, and the service room or kitchen has two 19th-century unglazed windows with square-sectioned pine mullions at the rear. The service room features an exposed 17th-century crossbeam that is chamfered with straight-cut stops, but otherwise, only Victorian fittings are visible. The roof is inaccessible, but the layout suggests that early features may survive behind the 19th-century plasterwork. The date of the rear block is unknown.
