Description

Barn, linhays, and cart shed ranges, located immediately north northwest of Leigh Barton Farmhouse, date to approximately the late 18th century to early 19th century, with further alterations in the later 19th century. The buildings are constructed of stone rubble with brick dressings and brick infilling, and have Bridgwater clay tile roofs—the barn is half-hipped, while the linhays and cart sheds have gabled ends.

The buildings are arranged around a courtyard. The bank barn, situated on the north side, features a horse engine house at the rear, with linhays adjoining it to the left (west) and right (east). The linhay to the right is at a right angle, forming the east side of the courtyard, and both were converted into shippons later in the 19th century. A single-storey range is attached to the north range at one end, and a detached cart shed is at the other end, forming an L-shape and returning to create the south side of the courtyard.

The barn has segmental brick arch openings on the ground floor, and a wide doorway on the first floor centrally, with plank double doors and a canopy supported by the main roof. The linhay at a right angle to the right is open with brickwork between the timber posts, featuring small windows; the linhay to the left is infilled with concrete blocks and has corrugated iron cladding on the first floor. The front of the detached cart shed range, on the south and east sides, is also infilled with concrete blocks between some of the posts.

The barn’s interior contains a 6-bay tie-beam roof, supported by unchamfered cross-beams. The linhays and cart shed ranges have staggered butt-purlin roofs, with unchamfered floor beams in the linhays. The horse engine house has lost its beam.
