Description

Blackaday is a house that likely has a core dating from the 16th or 17th century but was rebuilt in the 18th century. It features plastered cob on rubble footings, with cob and rubble stacks topped with 19th-century brick, and a thatched roof. The layout appears to be a three-room-and-through-passage plan, with an inner room at the west end facing south. There is a cob stack projecting from the east end and an axial stack at the upper end of the hall. The rear (north) side has late 19th and 20th-century outshots, which include a two-storey gabled porch with weather-boarded sides and a corrugated iron roof. The main roof is hipped at both ends.

The house has two storeys and a six-window front that attempts symmetry. It features timber sash windows at each end and a central pair on the first floor, with all having 12 panes except for the left window on the first floor, which has 16 panes. Other fixed-pane windows with glazing bars of various sizes are also present. The front door is off-centre to the right and is accessed through a 20th-century rustic porch with a hipped thatched roof. There is a second 20th-century porch to the left of centre, projecting from the hall, with glazed sides and a door, and a monopitch roof.

Despite the suspected early core, all exposed internal features date from the 18th century or later. The hall and service room have chamfered cross beams with run-out stops, and there is a cob service fireplace with a chamfered oak lintel resting on granite monoliths.
