Description

SX 79 SE CHERITON BISHOP VENBRIDGE HILL

10/52 Blackaday

II

House. Possibly C16 or C17 core, rebuilt in C18. Plastered cob on rubble footings; cob and rubble stacks topped with C19 brick; thatched roof. Apparently a 3-room-and-through-passage plan with inner room at west end, facing south. Cob stack projecting from east end and axial stack at upper end of hall. Late C19 and C20 outshots to rear (north) incorporate 2-storey gabled porch with weather-boarded sides and corrugated iron roof. Main roof hipped each end. 2 storeys. 6-window (south) front with vague attempt at symmetry. Timber sashes at each end and central first floor pair (all 12 panes except first floor left of 16-panes) other fixed pane windows with glazing bars of various sizes. Front door off-centre to right behind C20 rustic porch with hipped thatched roof. Second C20 porch left of centre projecting from hall with glazed sides and door and monopitch roof. Despite suspected early core all exposed internal features C18 or later. Hall and service room have chamfered cross beams with runout stops and cob service fireplace with chamfered oak lintel resting on granite monoliths.
