Description

A row of three contemporary cottages, likely dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, situated in Cheriton village. The cottages are constructed with plastered cob on rubble footings, featuring cob or stone stacks topped with brick. Way Cottage and Little Cott have thatched wheat reed roofs, while Little Cott’s roof has been replaced with corrugated asbestos. Resthaven has a thatched roof.

The cottages are small, two-story buildings, each originally with two rooms, with cob party walls separating them. Way Cottage (at the west end) and Little Cott (in the centre) share an axial stack in their party wall and have doors to smaller outer rooms. Resthaven (on the right, closest to the road) follows a similar plan, with a central door and a large projecting gable-end stack incorporating a thatch-roofed oven projection. A 20th-century porch has been added to Resthaven.

The window arrangement varies, but generally each cottage has two windows per floor. Original 19th-century windows remain in Way Cottage and Little Cott, consisting of two-light, six-pane casements. Way Cottage has mostly 20th-century replacements. All heated rooms contain plain chamfered cross beams, although fireplaces have been blocked with 20th-century chimney pieces. The cottages are included on the list for their group value.
