Description
The gate posts and gate located approximately 40 metres east of Heyswood House date from around 1850. They are constructed from stone rubble with sandstone posts and feature cast iron gates. The posts are square in shape and have ball caps set on 20th-century concrete. The gate consists of two bays with horizontal rails that are circular in section. The central rail and upright are designed with a circular interruption. The rails are supported by semi-circular bars that converge at this central circle, along with shallower segmental arches that span the entire gate, one arch curving upward and the other downward, both adorned with cast rosette bosses at their junctions. The end styles extend onto the top rail as ornamental scrolls, while the central upright rises with a bifurcated scroll topped by a gadrooned vase. This design is very similar to several gates found in mid-Devon made by the Wrights of Sandford.
