Description

Numbers 16 to 20 and Number 22 are a row of six adjoining urban cottages located on Exeter Road in Crediton. They were probably built around the 1840s, although they may have earlier origins. The front wall is made of Flemish bond brick, while the end walls are rendered. The cottages have a thatched roof that is hipped at the left end and gabled at the right end, with three axial stacks and rear lateral stacks featuring brick shafts.

The layout consists of a single-depth range. The three cottages on the left (Numbers 16 to 18) are double-fronted with central entrances, while Numbers 19 and 20 are single-fronted. Number 22 has been converted into a double-fronted plan from two single-fronted cottages. The buildings are two storeys high, with an asymmetrical arrangement of windows: 2:2:2:1:1:3 across the front.

Number 16 has its entrance on the left end and features two ground floor 20th-century timber small-pane top-hung casements, along with two first floor late 19th or 20th-century two-light casements. Number 17 has a central plank door, a 20th-century timber small-pane top-hung casement to the left, and a 19th-century sliding sash window to the right with four panes per light. The first floor has one two-light and one three-light 19th-century timber casement. Number 18 has a 20th-century boarded door in the centre with a glazed pane, flanked by 4/4-pane sashes, and two first floor top-hung timber casements.

Numbers 19 and 20 each have half-glazed 20th-century doors towards the centre, a 16-pane horned sash window alongside, and a first floor two-light casement. Number 22 features steps leading up to a central four-panel front door with glazed top panels, a 16-pane sash window to the left, a two-over-two pane sash to the right, and three first floor two-light casements with two panes per light. Blocked doorways on the front indicate that Number 22 was originally two smaller cottages.

The interior has not been inspected but may contain features of interest. The combination of brick and thatch is unusual in Devon. These cottages are an important part of the entrance into the town from the Exeter side.
