Description

Two cottages, originally a barn, dating from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. They were converted into cottages in the first half of the 19th century and modernised in the 20th. The walls are plastered cob on rubble footings, with brick and stone rubble stacks, one featuring an early 19th-century chimney shaft. The roof is now corrugated asbestos, but was originally thatched.

The cottages are arranged with two rooms facing east within the original barn structure. In the 20th century, a cartshed at the north end of the right-hand cottage (No. 3) was converted into a third room. Both cottages have front lateral stacks. The cottages originally had a symmetrical two-window front, and some 19th-century casement windows with glazing bars remain. The cottage doors now stand side-by-side, blocking the original barn door and flanked by short projecting midstrey walls. Fireplaces were inserted on either side, with only the left one (in No. 4) retaining a chimney shaft. A third window and door were added to the 20th-century extension. The roof is hipped at each end.

The interiors largely date from the 19th century, featuring plain carpentry and brick fireplaces with plain oak lintels. The original barn roof remains, supported by A-frame trusses with pegged and nailed lap-jointed collars.
