Description
The Castle Hotel is a public house located on Fore Street in Bradninch, dating from around 1835 with some alterations made in the late 19th century. The building is finished in stucco and has a slate hipped roof, featuring a left-hand stack with a brick chimney. It stands three storeys tall and has a symmetrical front with three windows, which are set beneath slightly overhanging eaves and stone quoins.
The first and second floors have hornless sash windows, originally designed with six panes per sash, but now reduced to two panes. A central portico, dating from circa 1835, is supported by two debased Tuscan columns with pilasters and features a moulded canopy above a round-headed doorway with panelled reveals. The window architraves were added in the late 19th century or early 20th century; they are plain on the second floor and shouldered on the first and ground floors, complete with capitals and keystones. The original ground-floor sashes from 1835 were replaced with tripartite windows that include four small top lights, now with one pane in each main light. The Castle Hotel is an important feature of the townscape at the top of Fore Street.
