Description
199 High Street is a very narrow town house that now has a shop at ground floor level. The front dates from the 18th century, but it is suspected that the building may be older behind the façade. It is stuccoed and painted, likely timber-framed, with a roof covering that is not visible due to a parapet and concealed rainwater goods.
The building has a deep rectangular plan and stands four storeys high. It features one window on the second and third floors, and two windows on the first floor. Above is a parapet with a deeply projecting cornice. There may be a jetty at the first floor, which is concealed by the shop fascia, suggesting the timber framing. The ground floor has a 20th-century shop front with plate glass windows and a recessed entrance. The windows above are all boxed sashes with moulded architraves, reglazed as two-pane horned sashes.
The interior of the ground floor front has been gutted for modern shop use, but features of interest may still survive in other areas of the building. Many of the houses along High Street that escaped bomb damage are of 17th century or earlier origin.
