Description
No 196 on High Street is a building with a front dating from the 18th century, although it is much altered and modernized, and it stands on a 16th-century structure. The exterior features a stucco front, is four storeys high, and has two sash windows with glazing bars. The shopfront has been modernized. Inside, there is a room at the back, now part of a showroom, which contains a late 16th-century fireplace. This fireplace has a plaster overmantel featuring the Royal Arms and is flanked by caryatid figures. Nearby, there is a four-light oak window with mullions and transoms, which retains good original casement catches. The building was gutted in 1973. Nos 192 to 203 form a group with this property.
