Description

This building, located at 195 High Street, is a town house that now features a shop at ground floor level. It has a core dating from around 1700, with later alterations and a refronting from the mid-19th century. The structure is built with mass wall construction, which is stuccoed and painted, while the left side is made of brick. The slate roof, with red ridge tiles, is concealed on the front elevation by a parapet, and there are roughcast chimney shafts.

The building has a deep, rectangular plan with a back block that projects from the rear left and is heated by stacks on the left side. It stands four storeys high and has a two-bay front. The ground floor features an early 20th-century shop front with pilasters on both sides that have sunk panels, along with sunk panels below the plate glass shop windows and a recessed central doorway. The glazed shop door includes a low panel and a plain, deep overlight.

On the first floor, there are two 3/6 hornless sash windows, while the second floor has two 12-pane hornless sash windows. The third floor also features 3/6 hornless sash windows. The left return is rendered at the ground floor and forms part of a narrow lane called Parliament Street. The painted brick rear elevations can be partly seen from Parliament Street.

Although the interior has not been inspected, it is known that the first floor contains bolection-moulded panelling from the late 17th or early 18th century, and other interesting features may still be present.
