Description

A terrace of five houses built in the 1840s on Monmouth Street, Topsham. The houses are constructed with a solid wall, with some areas finished in roughcast and others in stucco. They have slate roofs and brick chimney stacks. The houses were not built to identical sizes, and the doorways are set to one side.

The front of the terrace is asymmetrical, with an irregular arrangement of three, two, one, two and two windows. The original architectural details are well preserved. Deep eaves are topped with a boxed cornice. The front doors are six-panelled, with recessed panels and deep, plain overlights. The windows are double-hung sashes with margin panes, which are larger on the ground floor. Number 24, on the left-hand side, has an additional, narrow bay with a small entrance door and the main entrance door slightly left of centre. Numbers 25 and 28 have their front doors on the right side, whilst number 26 and 27 have theirs on the left. Number 27 is unusual in having only one window on its first floor. The interiors have not been inspected, but may contain features of interest. The terrace is a complete and representative example of its type, with the margin-pane sashes being typical of the period.
