Description
The Hermitage is an interesting group of thatched cottages, likely dating from the 17th century, located on Exwick Hill. The main building, known as The Hermitage, features two two-storey wings that meet at an acute angle. It has early 19th century leaded gothic casement windows, a rustic verandah, and both dormers and half-dormers. Adjoining The Hermitage is No 22, which has a brick and cob gabled front facing the road, with 18th century sash windows and a gabled hood supported by brackets over the door. Behind these, Hermitage Cottages primarily have cob walls and more recent wooden casement windows. Nos 1 and 2 of Hermitage Cottages feature early panelled doors. The Hermitage, No 22, and Nos 1 to 6 of Hermitage Cottages are recognized as a cohesive group.
