Description

A terrace of 17 houses built in the 1830s, likely by Harvey. The construction is of rendered mass walls, with slate roofs and brick chimney shafts featuring bands. The architectural style is Italianate with Gothick detailing to the verandahs. The houses are situated with small front gardens facing a pedestrian lane. Each house is one room wide and two rooms deep, with a main entrance to the left and service blocks to the rear. They are two storeys and have attics. The houses have deep boxed eaves, and while most feature round-headed doorways and fanlights, details vary. Some houses have two first-floor sash windows, some one, and others have a single first-floor blind recess instead of a second window. While some reglazing has occurred, many retain small-pane sashes. All have attic dormers. Number 1 has a square-headed doorway and overlight with margin panes, a French window with small panes and margin lights, and a three-bay timber verandah with cranked arches featuring Gothic spandrels with pierced quatrefoils in roundels, and a slate and glazed roof. Number 5 has two-pane sashes with horns and a gabled Gothic timber porch on posts, featuring timber lattice in the gable and sides. Number 6 has two-pane horned sashes and a three-bay verandah on timber posts with elaborate pierced carving to the spandrels and panels above the outer bays, with a tiled roof over the verandah. The interiors have not been inspected but may retain features of interest. This terrace provides an interesting example of small houses with some superior detailing, reflecting group value.
