Description
These buildings at numbers 8, 9, and 9A form a single block, likely dating from around 1450. They are constructed primarily of Heavitree stone. Number 8 has no frontage of its own, instead featuring an arched entrance leading to an open passage connecting to the Law Library and Notaries House. This passage contains two blocked stone doorways. The buildings have a long two-story front, with coursed Heavitree stone masonry at ground level and half-timbering above. The upper floor projects and is supported by curved oak brackets resting on stone corbels. The archway to number 8 is of Beer stone, likely dating from the 15th or 16th century, and is adorned with carved spandrels. The ground floor also incorporates two small, rectangular stone windows with grilles. Number 9 has an 18th-century fanlight over its doorway, and the entrance to number 9A is on the side. The first floor of number 9 features 18th-century sash windows, including two segmental bow windows, all with glazing bars. The roofs are slate. These buildings contribute to the group value of the listed buildings in Cathedral Close.
